Meet Celaena Sardothien.
Beautiful. Deadly. Destined for greatness.
In the dark, filthy salt mines of Endovier, an eighteen-year-old girl is serving a life sentence. She is a trained assassin, the best of her kind, but she made a fatal mistake: she got caught.
Young Captain Westfall offers her a deal: her freedom in return for one huge sacrifice. Celaena must represent the prince in a to-the-death tournament—fighting the most gifted thieves and assassins in the land. Live or die, Celaena will be free. Win or lose, she is about to discover her true destiny. But will her assassin’s heart be melted?
It has taken me a while to gather my thoughts up on this book. I think the author did a brilliant job at world building I could imagine the world perfectly, though I often got a little confused at all the districts/countries that were mentioned throughout the book. I'd heard that this was a retelling of Cinderella and personally I couldn't really see how. I know it does have some aspects with the Crown Prince falling for her but that was about it.
The characters have real emotions, this is something that you don't get to see much of. We get to almost know most of the characters on an intimate level, at points you will feel sorry for more than one character. I love watching Celaena grow as a character, she goes from being uncaring to caring, she really does grow. I also like the character of Choal though I think out of all the characters he is the one that masks his feelings the most. All the supporting cast were needed as well, I don't think one character was not needed and they all fit into the story at one point or another perfectly.
I adored the story, I enjoyed the fast paces of the novel and how quickly I was drawn into the book. I never expected to love the book as much as I did, I am not the biggest fantasy lover, but it seems that after reading this book I wanted to read more and more fantasy. I can not wait for the next in the series. If it even half as good as this novel I'll be happy.
Almost everyone can enjoy this novel at some level, those who aren't diversed in fantasy will be able to gain something from this book, while those that like a little romance can also get something out of this book. It is a great all round book that will be perfect for lovers of any genre. A true nail biting book that has an air of paranormal thrown in for good measure!
